I'm Julie, mum of two beautiful but very demanding kids!
After trying for 3 years to get pregnant with my first child, and then knowing nothing about babies when he did come along. I picked up loads of great advice along the way.
I have created my web site to help ease women naturally into motherhood. So grab a cuppa and take a look around my site, dedicated to all the mothers of the world, new and not so new! Motherhood is a joyous occasion, make it the best time in your life!
so what is a diaper cake? (or if you live here in the UK, you might know it as a nappy cake!)
A diaper cake is cake - made from diapers! The diapers are rolled up nice and tight, and then made into layers. A few (hundred) elastic bands and maybe a touch of glue later, you have a fabulous diaper cake.
What are diaper cakes for? Generally they are used as a gift for the mum-to-be, or more so now than before - the dad-to-be. They can be used as the centre-piece on the table of a baby shower, or just given as a gift before mum leaves work to have her baby. They are a fabulous way of saying 'Congratulations'
What is the fascination with diaper cakes? Well I can see it! A diaper cake has a few really good features:
- It's a great gift
It can include lots of stuff that mum needs (not just diapers)
It can be one tier or two tiers or even more (3 or 4)
You can easily buy them on-line (the only finger you have to lift is to type in the delivery address!)
Or if you've got a little bit of patience you could have a go at making one yourself.
A diaper cake can include lots of little gifts. If you're making your own you can tuck them in all around the edges.
Things like: baby lotion, powder, bibs, bottles, hooded bath towels, baby vests (onesies if your in the US) Pacifiers, teddy bears and lots more besides. If it will fit, and it's safe for baby then you can add it!
If you go for a 3 or 4 tier, then it makes a great gift from a group of people. One warning though, the bigger they get, the more expensive they get!
Diaper cakes have come a long way in the last couple of years. Gone are the cakes that actually look like they're made out of diapers! The new in thing is themed diaper cakes. So if your having a baby shower based around the theme of Beatrix Potter or maybe Winnie-the-pooh (everybody's favourite at one time or another) then you can now buy a diaper cake to match. The variation of themed cakes available is astounding from cammo bear to Noah's ark, stars and stripes to Looney tunes, elegant to nursery rhyme! You name, you can buy it! And if it isn't in the catalogue, the store will more than likely make it to order.
