I have a family member who was determined to teach her son not to smoke cigarettes. She verbally taught him all the reasons why he should not smoke. She drilled him on the cost, the health issues, the addiction problems, that he would age early, that smoking looked horrible and made you smell like an ashtray and that he would die young of a horrible death.

These were truths and he may have listened to her except, while she was teaching him these things, she was smoking cigarettes herself. She was a terrible example. She was too blind to see that kids do what you do not what say. So what do you think he did when he grew up? He smoked too.

What a sad story because this woman has since died from the effects of tobacco and today her son is addicted to cigarettes and also cocaine!

If she had wanted him not to smoke cigarettes the best thing she could have done was to quite smoking herself.

If you want your kids to have good habits, you must live them too. A double standard does not work! Saying one thing and doing another is a waste of time.

Example is the greatest teacher! Along with teaching kids the truths of behavior and healthy habits example is your greatest tool to help your children and others make good choices in their lives.

Your kids may not listen to all you say and you may feel your wasting your time. They may even use their free agency to make their own bad choices. But if you are an example of what you are teaching two things will happen. You will not have to feel like you have failed them and if they do make bad choices they will have the opportunity to one day change their ways and make good choices. Why? Because they will remember what you taught them through your example. Once they have experienced life for themselves they will in most cases, discover that the things you taught by example were true and choose to live the things you taught them when they were young.

Example is the best teacher. Make sure you live in a way that blesses your life and theirs.
