Letting grandma care for my baby for an overnight visit was intended to provide me rest. I had never been away from my daughter for any length of time in her short four month old lifetime. For over a month, my mother had been asking to keep her for an overnight visit, and I could not put it off any longer. Preparing everything to get her to grandma's house made me feel like I needed a vacation. And I had never been apart from my baby overnight. My mom bought a few baby things to keep at her house, but she does not have everything she needed even for an overnight visit. My mind started going over the possibilities. If she needed to go anywhere, the baby travel system with the car seat and the seat base was a necessity. I would have to install it in her car before we left. It is important to be prepared, and even though I knew my mother wasn't planning on going anywhere, I wanted her to be able to go if necessary. So to be prepared for anything, the stroller, car seat and base went into my van. Althought my mother did have a play pen which could be used as an overhight crib, my daughter seldom falls asleep in her crib. I usually have to put her in one of my ring slings and wear her around the house until she falls asleep. After she has fallen asleep, I carefully place her in her crib. I brought along one of my ring slings and planned on showing my mother how to use it. My husband and I decided to use cloth diapers during the pregnancy. Cloth diapers were used with my older siblings but I was a disposable diaper baby. She likened my cloth diaper decision to going in reverse. my mother had a hard time understanding how much cloth diapers had improved since her days of diapering me. To show her how simple they were to use, I was going to bring along my Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers. I packed the cloth diapers as well as a wet bag so that I could show my mother how much they had improved from the old style cloth diaper. I needed a rest when I finally completed packing the vehicle, but I had to leave. My mother and I spent over two hours going over everything after heading to her home. When she asked me if I thought she had ever taken care of a baby, I realized it was time to leave. Everything that would make the overnight visit easy for both my mother and daughter was packed. I then went back home to prepare for my dinner date with my husband. I could not enjoy my evening out because I missed my baby so much I ended up calling my mother almost ten times in three hours. The visit went very well and all my worry was for naught. My mother had a wonderful time taking care of a little one once again while my daughter slept through the entire night for the first time.

By: Andrea Beilinson | 01/12/2009Theories of Attachment As parents and parents-to-be, we spend a lot of time reading and researching various theories of parenting, trying to discover what is best for baby, and what will work for our families. Child Sensory Development
By: Andrea Beilinson | 01/12/2009Promoting Sensory Development in Children At birth, your baby's senses tell him the things he needs in order to survive: when to be fed, and when to sleep. Neither of you is focusing on auditory, visual, or tactile development, but you both soon will be. These senses unfold slowly, but perceptibly, and soon you'll realize that your baby is seeing more clearly, turning his head to the sound of your voice, and wants to grasp objects.
