How Do You Keep Calm When Your Toddler is Not? 7 Practical Strategies

Just how do you keep calm when your toddler is doing their best impression of an irate imp who has just stubbed their toe? Young children are  on a continual emotional seesaw, and it's not always easy to be the calming influence you aspire to be.

There are things you can do to keep on an even keel - try any of the following ideas:

Prevent problems before they arise. For example avoid tantrum triggers such as shopping if possible. Distraction and one-to-one attention  can work wonders as well.

Work out some consistent toddler discipline strategies. The important word is 'consistent' here: if a child whines for 10 minutes for an ice cream, don't give in. If you do she will assume that  the next time she wants one, as long as she can whine for 10 minutes, she will get her way.

Remember that your child is just that: naturally immature. Screaming fits and a self-centred take on the world are completely normal at this age.  Agonising or complaining over the fact that they give you a hard time is itself a waste of time.

This might help you to keep calm when your child isn't: it's up to you to teach him how to handle the disapointments and stresses of everyday life.  Calm parenting creates calmer kids.

3 Instant Ways To Keep Your Temper When Your Toddler Has Lost Theirs:

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. If you have never tried this, it's hard to believe that it works. But it does. By tapping on various points on your face, neck and hands, you can  create a strong feeling of serenity in the midst of any crisis.

Stop trying to explain the situation to your child if you feel your blood pressure rising. It's all too easy to wind yourself up with the words that you use. Often long explanations are lost on a toddler anyway. One or two instructions, repeated over and over can be strangely calming

Surprise yourself and your child - if you do something out of the ordinary, your toddler may well forget just what they were so cross about. Try
doing a silly dance, running out of the room, or doing an animal impression. This takes the focus away from any possible conflict.

How do you keep calm when your young child is testing your limits? It isn't always easy, but it's definitely possible - with practise.
