If your child is acting up it’s important you find out why. Are they receiving enough attention from you and your partner? Do you have a strong relationship with your child where they can talk to you about their concerns?
Sometimes children play up just to get noticed. To them any attention (even bad) is better than being ignored. This may not be intentional, on your part. But it’s worth considering if you and your partner are busy and caught up with other things? Is enough quality time being spent together?
If your child is sullen and detached it could be a sign something is up. Children today have to deal with many pressures we didn’t have to while we were growing up. Just telling your child you are available to talk and would help them in any way can be very reassuring for them to here.
(Perhaps if you have a moody teenager, pushing a note under their bedroom door can work if you feel uncomfortable talking to them face to face.)
Has there been a recent change of events that has upset your child’s routine? The death of a pet, their best friend changing school or being affected by you and your partner arguing? You can ask them directly if you cannot read between the lines.
Children are sensitive and pick up on things you may not be aware of. Or things you thought you may have hidden from them! Children can take on things that are definitely not their fault, but somehow think they are responsible. This is a terrible burden for them to carry around.
Think back to your own childhood and see if you are treating your child how your parents treated you. Even though not intentional, you may be subconsciously acting out your childhood.
For example you may make your children eat up all the dinner that’s on their plate (even when they are full) because your parents made you do the same. Or you may encourage them to do subjects in school your children are not interested in taking - simply because your parents encouraged you to do the same.
Sometimes it can be helpful talking with the parents of your child’s friends. They may be able to gleam something you are missing. This is especially so if your child spends a lot of time at their friends house more than yours.
Or perhaps you could have a chat with their teacher at school. Some children can be perfectly happy everywhere else and just be acting odd at home. Finding this out will put your mind at ease, if this is the case.
You need to decipher if this is just “a phase” or if something serious is underpinning your child’s behaviour.
