This article is not intended to provide medical advice; it is based on one person’s experience with a teething baby

A teething baby is probably also an agitated and difficult baby. And, this can be very trying for new or even experienced parents. To help a baby through the teething process it is important to be aware of it and identify that a baby is having a ‘teething day/s’. Often, parents overlook the fact that a baby is teething and attribute their behavior to other factors such as tiredness, food irritation or just naughtiness.

The teething process varies widely from baby to baby. Some babies are irritated only for the first tooth and then grow accustomed to the new sensations in their gums. Others are irritated for all 20. The teething process may be overnight or it may start months prior to the eruption of the tooth. The symptoms of teething are as varied as the process that each baby goes through. They include irritability, drooling, gnawing, coughing, chin rash, diarrhea, cold like symptoms and disturbed sleep.

There is no set age for a baby to start teething. If a baby starts before 6 months old and he/she has not started solids, breastfeeding is a great way to help soothe the baby. The sucking seems to massage the gums while calming the baby. Another trick to try is a frozen washcloth. Just soak a washcloth with drinking water and place in the freezer. Babies love it as it is cold and moulds itself around their gums. I haven’t mentioned teething rings yet because I have found them to only be effective for short periods of time. It is cheaper and perhaps more effective to clean some of the baby’s plastic toys so that he/she can gnaw on it. Select toys with no sharp edges and no parts that can be pulled off.

For the older baby, breastfeeding and toys are still good techniques. In addition, the baby is now able to have teething rusks. For babies that are already adept with finger foods, try dry toasts or grissini (bread sticks). If you are able to get Rambutans, chill them and hold one to the baby’s mouth to let him/her gnaw on it. The flesh of the Rambutan will not easily come off and the cool, soft texture mixed with the sweet taste will definitely help baby forget about his/her sore gums.

Finally, while all the suggestions above will help soothe the baby’s gums don’t forget that these experiences are new to the baby and he/she may be feeling overwhelmed by them. Cuddles work wonders for a teething baby. If you recognize that your baby is have a teething day/s, spend more time cuddling and being in physical contact with him/her.

Is it normal for a baby chick to have an umbilical ...
By: ange123 | 10-05-2008
Is it normal for a baby chick to have an umbilical cord? The baby chick is about two weeks old and has some type of cord ?hanging from it's backside. this just now as of two days ago came evident. The chick was born early the two others which hatched died after a day or so. There were 30 other eggs which never hatched. When the eggs were cracked open the chicks seemed to be fully developed, but had already died. I have very little knowledge of this. I took the live chick from someone who should never have had any animals. I have show horses and have had chickens before, but never incubated any. Can anyone help to tell me if this chick has a deficiency or is this normal? He or she eats well and seems very healthy. I have gotten most of my knowledge on the internet on how to raise the chick and its needs. I just want to know if something is wrong? Thanks to anyone who can help.E-mail address ange1@bellsouth.net

By: Funnywoman18 | 04-05-2008
My daughter who is 14 has had two sets of braces. When the second set was removed some two years ago, our dentist cautioned us that one of her permanent front teeth was loose! She advised us that our orthodontist should put a splint on the back of the two front teeth. The orthodontist did so, and kept it on for 1.5 years. To our suprise he removed the wire and made her a new retainer. Now she says that her front tooth is loose again! Help! Why isn't that front tooth stable and how can we make it stable? Thanks for your help.

The birth father's family wants the baby
By: faithsmom | 30-04-2008
Our birth mom has signed the TPR and we have Power of Attorney to have our daughter in our home. We have had her for almost 6 weeks and brought her home from the hospital. The birth father didn't want anything to do with her, before and after she was born. He was told that she had been born, but chose not to come to the hospital. He planned on signing the TPR, but since he is underage, his parents know and they want the baby. He still says that he doesn't want her, but that he will lie to the judge and tell them that he does, just so his mom and dad can have her. Can this happen and what are our rights as adoptive parents???

Minimizing Tantrums When Going Out
By: Amanda Lim | 16/07/2007 | Parenting
Leaving the house with a baby is always a cumbersome activity with the need to get baby ready, pack the diaper bag and just load everything in the car before starting out. It is usually made even more difficult as a baby grows older and becomes ‘difficult’. Tantrums are just a normal part of a baby’s development. They come about because the baby is learning about frustration but has not learnt enough to deal with it yet.
