Looking Critically At What Meds Work For Adhd

What do the three types of ADHD drugs commonly prescribed for ADHD all have in common ? They all come with a long and frightening list of warnings and possible side effects. Any parent before deciding which type of medication to opt for will have to take a long hard look at what meds work for ADHD and the risks involved.

What three types of drugs are prescribed ? There are psychostimulants which are basically made from amphetamines. These go by various names such as Ritalin whose main component is methylphenidate, Concerto and Focalin. Then we have antidepressants such as Welbutrin. Finally we have drugs such as Strattera (atomexetine) which is the only nonstimulant drug but it has not been found to be so effective for hyperactivity. The latest warning about this particular drug issued by The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Drug Safety Update states that even normal doses of atomexetine has been linked to psychotic or manic symptoms in children who have had no history of these conditions up to now. Just think that there are no warning labels on ADHD homeopathic remedies ! The only precautions parents have to take is to find a reputable company with FDA approved procedures

Before taking into further consideration what meds work for ADHD, the parent is confronted with another set of precautions. The doctor may ask about history of heart problems, family history of suicide, depression and anxiety. If the answer is yes, then careful monitoring of the child will have to be done while on medication. There is a further risk of stimulant abuse, some students use them for cramming, others for weight loss. I know of young teenagers who have been asked to sell their ADHD drugs to other kids.

Many parents know what meds work for ADHD and that they do keep some ADHD symptoms under control but when they read about the risks I have outlined above, they immediately click off and google 'ADHD natural medications'. These are just the risks which, admittedly will probably be present in a small number of cases. The drugs industry claim that ADHD meds are effective and even safe in treating between 70% and 80% of cases. But the parents who have opted for ADHD natural medications such as a homeopathic remedy are safe in the knowledge that they need not worry about possible drug abuse, nasty side effects or warnings which seem to come from a horror science fiction movie.

The sad news is that although the medical profession will quote ad nauseum what meds work for ADHD, there is very little research into the long term effects on the brain development of children. All these risks to treat a mere mental disorder which also has been exaggerated out of all proportion ! Choosing ADHD natural medications is the only way to move forward but there are very few doctors who will tell you that.
