Making Graduation Cake

There are lots of ways of creating the graduation cake you need for the party. The cake is always seen as a special thing. Just think back to your own birthdays and the excitement when the cake was presented and everyone sang happy birthday. It is a great moment in the celebrations. I also think everyone notices a beautiful cake and the special detail that it contains. The hard work getting the decorations right is always worthwhile.

I have made a few graduation cakes and I have found that I started off looking to create a classic, simple design. Perhaps with butter icing in a cream color. In my mind that would be topped off with a simple chocolate graduation cap and congratulations to the graduate would be written in an edible beads pattern. It is important for me to produce exactly the cake the graduate wants, so my own ideas can be put to the side. For my own family they have wanted a fairly classic type graduation cake. However for others I have made shaped and themed cakes just as they wanted. My feeling is why not, the graduate should be able to receive a cake that is special to them. Guests will likely identify with the graduation cake with the graduate and enjoy seeing a smiling happy graduate blow out their candles.

My nephew is going to be a doctor so although he loves golf we agreed that being a doctor was so momentous that we should theme the graduation cake on that. I shaped the cake as an emergency medical kit. This gave a white cake with a red cross on it. O added white frosting and created the red cross from red fondant, rolled very flat. I also made a stethoscope from fondant and a straw to add to the toppings. I wrote congratulation doctor Jake in blue frosting. The cake was his favorite lemon flavor with a butter cream filling.

My niece is going to be a kindergarten teacher. I had seen a particular design a few places before but decided to run with it. The graduation cake was made as a normal square shaped cake frosted in white. From cake I made 3 building blacks which were frosted white and had an A, B or C added in colored writing. I built up the building black on top of the cake and added congratulations Katie to the main cake.

I have also made a balloon cake for a kindergarten graduation and a soccer ball one. Each of them really just took a simple process to make. Make the basic cake, frost it and add the decorations required to theme. Making a graduation cake is a lot of fun.
