Toddler discipline is one of the greatest challenges parents encounter. Knowing the proper way to deal with a grumpy child can leave parents feeling stressed and helpless. Parents need to know what to do when their child is screaming, kicking, pushing and refusing to listen.
Here are 9 ways parents can improve toddler discipline:
1. Get your child to listen. Wait until he has calmed down, otherwise he won’t be able to listen.
2. Keep your voice calm. Using a non-threatening tone will make your child more comfortable and less afraid of you or your reaction.
3. Listen to what your child is saying. It’s very important to understand what caused your child to get that upset, so listen without interrupting.
4. Find a quiet place to talk. Look for a place where no one else is around, this way you and your child can talk comfortably and without interruptions.
5. Don’t let your child see you upset. Even if your child’s behavior makes you feel frustrated, you’ll be able to accomplish more if you stay calmed.
6. Wait until the tantrum is over to talk to him. Most people do not reason when upset, the same goes for children.
7. Don’t give in to tantrums. If you allow your child to get what he wants to quickly stop his temper tantrum, you’re just promoting such behavior.
8. Redirect your child’s attention. Distract your child with something new and of interest to him. Most of the time children forget about the tantrum and move on.
9. Inform your child that such behavior won’t let him get what he wants. If your child understands he won’t get what he wants with a tantrum, most likely he won’t even do one.
Toddler discipline can drive parents of the wall; however, even at a very young age a toddler is able to understand what he can or can’t do with the proper parent approach. So, stay calm, be consistent, don’t give in, communicate and listen, you can improve your child’s behavior.
