Management is about managing people. Someone can be a higher flyer at work managing lots of people in important projects and yet face difficulty in managing their children especially their teenager at home. Isn’t managing people the same as managing your teenager? There are some similarities and yet there are some differences and that is why one is call a manager and the other a parent. In Parenting Teenagers guide we will look at why you can be a good manager and yet you can be a poor parent.
The biggest difference between a manager and a parent is the following:
- The person can choose his or her manager
- The manager can choose his or her person
- The teenager or children cannot choose his or her parents
- The parents cannot choose his or her teenager or children
This difference is why you can be a good manager but yet can be a poor parent. It is all about authority and influence. When you are a manager you have the influence and the authority and can exert your authority or influence over the person who reports to you . You have an influence over this person job security which means his livelihood. When you are a parent you have influence and authority over your children when they are young. You have an influence over your young children because they need to have your security. Your influence and authority over your children will start to wane as your children grow older and become a teenager. They don’t need your security as much as when they were young. They feel they are more independent now.
You have to recognize this independence and learn to manage your teenager using a less authoritative approach and a more consultative approach. A consultative approach would means taking their inputs into consideration thus giving them a sense of independence. When decisions make include their inputs, getting your teenager to comply would stand a much better chance of acceptance. In Parenting Teenager, remember you are a parent and not a manager. Leave your managerial role at work and turn on your parenting role at home.
You can be a good manager and a good parent as long as you know which roles you need to play. There are more useful tips in this Parenting Teenagers guide.
