shall I put my baby in nursery? what to look for to make sure your baby is safe and happy?

In this series of articles we look at each age of a child to determine which childcare setting is the best for both baby, toddler and preschooler and for you

Your child's safety, happiness, care and well being are the most important factors to concider when choosing the right childcare setting for your baby,if a family member or childminder is not an option and you wish to choose a nursery here are some facts to help you make the right decision.

1.look at the age of the staff in the Baby room there should be mixed ages, but older experienced staff which are the better option for caring for babies under 1.

2.Ask how long each of the staff have been there for. staff that are frequently leaving and new ones starting  is not a good sign. Baby's need stability and a regular keyworker that can look after them.

3. cleanliness look at the way staff change nappies is it safe, hygenic, do they wash their hands dont go in the morning go a few times at different times to see how they cope throughout the day.

4.Accidents! for confidentiality reasons they may not let you but have a look at the accident book if a lot of accidents occur it may suggest they are not supervising the children properly.mild bumps do happen a lot with babies but serious ones are a cause for concern.

5.How do the staff interect with each other is there bickering amongst them selves. If the staff are happy then the children will be too.

6. safety! is the room safe! is it cluttered, untidy for adults to fall on toys, even though toys can be around does it look dangerous.broken toys ?dirty toys ?Is there carrier bags left hanging around which can be a hazzard to babies?

7. Do the staff take babies out and about or for walks in the prams,or spend time in the garden? babies need plenty of fresh air?
