Many parents struggle with this question. Should you allow your kids to watch TV alone in their room, or should you allow your child to surf the web while alone in their room? If you think your child will be doing homework in their bedroom, your child could actually be watching pornography, R rated movies, or even chatting with some complete stranger online.
When I was a child living at home, I never had a TV or computer in my room. My parents did not allowed it, and they did not want to spend any extra money on electronics. And I never supported that decision until a few years ago when I actually started thinking about kids with access to potentially dangerous thing on the TV and web.
You might be thinking that sheltering your kids from the outside world will have more of a negative effect in the long run. However, what happens if your daughter starts chatting with another girl online from the same city that you live in. And your daughter and her new friend get along so well that your daughter decides to meet up with this girl after school one day. It might sound innocent, but what happens if that “girl” online is actually a 42 year old man.
So, you can never be sure what your kids are doing is safe. Even if it seems safe, it could be extremely dangerous. Not only is it a threat to your daughters, it is also a major threat to your sons, they might get into playing violent video games, and they might think that it is the perfect lifestyle.
However, even if you do not allow TVs and computers in your kid’s bedroom, there is still a chances of your children getting into dangerous thing via those electronics. But you need to do your part, and put parental control your computer and TV so that you can protect your children from getting into some harmful material.
I’m not saying that you need to take drastic action against your kids “pleasure pass time”, but I suggest that you take some steps in protecting your kids form the “bad side” of TV and computers. I personally think that having computers and TVs in your child’s room is a huge mistake, but I cannot tell you what to do. You need to make a decision that you think will best suit your child and you family.
Just remember, allowing your children to watch TV and surf the web without you controlling what they view, could have major consequences. I don’t like the thought of you spying on everything your child does online and on the TV, but you need to be vigilant to make sure your child is safe. Such as getting parental controlled internet, look at the history and cookies online, and block certain TV channels.
