The Best Bed Wetting Cures

Bed wetting is fairly common in children three years and older. It occurs when a child is a deep sleeper and he does not wake up when his bladder is full. Many parents fall into the pattern of putting a pull-up diaper on their child for bedtime, but this is a big mistake.

Yes, I know it is inconvenient to wake up at 2 am and have to change your son’s sheets because he wet the bed, but a pull-up diaper sends your child a mixed message. It tells your son that it is okay to continue wetting the bed at night and that is exactly what you are trying to stop!

First make sure that you have stopped your child from consuming any liquids two hours before bedtime. Ensure that he has drained his bladder before going to bed. I know these suggestions sound like common sense stuff, but you would be amazed at how many parents do not try these things first.

Let your child wet the bed and wake up because he is wet. He has to know that the consequence of not waking up is a wet bed. Having that pull-up diaper won’t give him the uncomfortable feeling. He needs to feel uncomfortable so that he can wake up.

As a parent you should gently wake up your child before you go to bed. Put you son on the potty so that he can drain his bladder. Be warned though that your child will fight this at first, but soon it will become just a part of his routine. You will get to a point where he can get to the potty while partially asleep. This is a successful method for many bed wetters.

If that doesn’t work, you may have to try a bed wetting alarm. The alarm is hooked up to your child. There is a moisture shield that attaches to your child’s underwear and when it gets wet, it sounds the alarm. If the alarm does not wake your child, then it will at least wake you up. You can then rouse your child and get him to the potty to finish up. With time he will wake up on his own and eventually he will sleep through the night without incident.

Please make sure that your child has had a complete physical to rule out the possibility of any type of medical illness that may be causing the bed wetting.
