Would you trust your child to someone you just met in a grocery store and claimed to be an experienced Nanny? Of course not! However, it is apparent that many parents come close to doing just this when they hire a Nanny or Babysitter. The parents only foundation for hiring these child sitters is a brief discussion and absolutely no Background Investigation or Check.
Two recent examples come from the North East US. In Connecticut, a Nanny was accused of stealing checks from the homes of her employers. Police found that this same Nanny had been moving from family to family committing similar crimes. She was arrested and charged with multiple counts of larceny, forgery and fraudulent use of ATM cards.
None of the victims had taken the time to do even a minimal Background check.
In New York, a recent newspaper article pointed out that a young live in male nanny was charged with molesting four boys by the police. He had been hired because of word-of-mouth references from parents in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city.
This are prime examples of how residents need to protect themselves when hiring an in-house employee, particularly one in charge of watching children like a nanny, babysitter, or au pair by doing a proper background investigation.
Most families who hire never check references or do background screening. To prevent yourself from becoming a victim, ask your nanny or babysitter for current and previous
addresses, birth date, and social security number. Let them know that you are doing a record search. It is, after all, her right to refuse a background check. See if they consent to investigation. If so, still go ahead and start with previous address look up searches. Search Social Security number for public criminal records and civil filings.
Use the search engines like Google, Yahoo and others to see if anything turns up right away. If not, try some of the popular on-line screening software available at a one time or yearly subscription fee. Don't risk hiring someone who has been charged or convicted of child sex abuse/neglect or has a criminal record. Protect yourself when hiring a person in charge of watching children like a nanny, babysitter, or au pair.
Remember, most families never check references or ran a background check before hiring child care help. Don't be one of them.
