But when the child is an autistic child then the techniques used for normal children in toilet training cannot be used here.

First we understand what autism is. It is a disorder, which is brought about by the dysfunction of the central nervous system, and it is noticed in a child during the first three years of a child's life. Autistic children always prefer to be left alone without being disturbed and their responses are always slow. It is because of all this that it is difficult toilet training for autism affected children.

There is a need for strong parental support while toilet training for autism affected children. There are a number of ways to train an autistic child. One is allow the child to watch the parents use the toilet, allow the child to use a potty chair, let the autistic child sit on the potty chair with all the clothes on, and to keep a watch on the timings when the child would normally take a pee or move its bowels.

Parents are encouraged to talk to the child as to what would happen when he or she is taken to the potty and if the child successfully takes a pee or moves its bowels there then the child should be praised and rewarded every time. You can also encourage the child by asking the child to wave to the contents of the toilet bowl when it is being flushed. This will certainly ease the anxiety of the child.

Autistic children do not understand why they have to use the toilet to ease themselves and no amount of explanation will be of any use to them as they will fail to understand logic.

Autistic children might resist when they are taken off diapers and made to use the potty chairs when they are being toilet trained. So parents have to be extremely patient and careful while toilet training for autism affected children.

Autistic children are found to dislike environments which are stimulating like the bathroom where there are bright lights and sounds of running water and also the flushing of water. They will get easily frightened and they are also very averse to taking off their clothes. These children are also not aware of their bodies getting soiled nor are they aware of the need to do their potty. So it is imperative that special methods be employed when it comes to toilet training for autism children.

If you have an autistic child it is better that you get the help of special educators who would be more experienced in helping you to toilet train your child.
