Knockoffs and the Right Stuff

A lot of mobile phone accessories have flooded the streets. By the term flood, I do not mean to imply that the streets are submerged in tons of cell phone accessories. But ubiquitously, there are some grains of truth in the statement. Branded cell phone enhancements like Nokia Accessories, LG Cell Phone Accessories, and Sprint Cell Phone Accessories (to name a few) have the most numbers of counterfeits. Though there is an old adage saying that imitation is the highest form of appreciation, legit manufacturers do not appreciate the losses in profits.

The faking of cell phone accessories is pretty much rampant, especially in Asia. Blame it on poverty and hunger. But what this situation reveals in full circle is the fact that products and goods in counterfeited nature are not entirely opposed by the law. And it does not only involve cell phone gizmos but other branded goods, specifically shoes, bags, clothing materials, perfumes, and clothing materials. There have been many arrests made over the years regarding these illegal activities but hitting the salesmen instead of the suppliers obviously does not do the trick. Or maybe that is the trick. The law is seen as an active force trying to remove the nuts from the society, but in reality they are protecting the maniacs on the loose. Of course, I am not wholly referring to the men in uniform as there are still a few good men in their ranks.

But what really irks most people is the fact that these products are already strewn all over the sidewalks in almost all major cities in Asia, in plain view even to the Law, and nothing has been done. Except for a few celebrated raids with the media, nothing of great impact has achieved. Smuggling and trafficking continue to prosper. People wonder whether if this prosperity has evaded the Law’s radar or has the Law turned its head if these atrocities manifest a blip on the screen.

Corruption, admittedly, has grab integrity and decency by the belt. It has plagued every government in the world and will continue to exist. Corruption will never die. That is a sad fact. But what we can do, as people in this world, is minimize its effects and keep it that way when we do. There will always be some nutheads every now and then but keeping a clear head when Corruption stares you in the face is victory already. But what is victory if you do not know how to use it? Victory, in the hands of the imprudent and unwise of men, is useless. For the tide of war can easily be lost or won by the most minuscule of unknown details.

If we are to gain a victory, for we can never win this war, we should do the right thing. But how do we define the right thing? Is following the Law, when Law itself seems to incapable of enforcing its own sets of laws? Maybe. But for starters, buy orginal cell phone accessories. That is a right thing.

Biopiracy

By: Kripalini Nesakumar | 28/12/2009
Biopiracy or stealing of indigenous knowledge from biodiversity rich developing countries is an exploding issue in Asia. Often plants developed over centuries by the methods of traditional agriculture in the third world are used by first world corporations as the basis of inventions. This is worrisome for India since patents, which were supposed to prevent piracy, have now become legitimized process for thievery of their traditional knowledge making it an exclusive property of multinationals.
