Every year the US government and all western governments provide millions of dollars worth of grants for a variety of causes. Many of these grants are for socially important activities that dont neccessarily provide adequate income to its participants. One example of this is the grants provided for musicians.
Why Musicians recieve grants
Music has been an integral part of human society and culture for tens of thousands of years. It can reflect the times it was created, it can create bonds with others and music can be an emotional outlet for many people. However just because it is important does not mean it is a sustainable way of life for many people. Particularly musicians who do not fit into the "mainstream" can suffer greatly for their art. Because there is so many different grant opportunities available within each country almost anyone could be eligible for a musician grant. In the US for example there are many different grants which range from $5,000 - $50,000. However special circumstance can be eligible for even more.

The best place to enquire is your local or state government. Most have grant offices that specifically deal with handing out grants to deserving individuals and organisations.
Getting a govenment grant can be a lifesaver for a musician. Many musicians who would think they are not eligible for such grants would be suprised. Governments place a huge importance on the impact of music in society and invest heavily through grants to keep the art strong.
