Is the Discover Gas Card for You?

Do you spend a lot of money on gas? Do you use a credit card on a regular basis? Do you hate annual credit card fees? Do you like to save money? Do you wish gas prices weren’t so high? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then the Discover Open Road Card will be great for you.

The Discover Open Road Card is Discover Card’s gas card. They will give you 5% cash back on all gas purchases and car improvement purchases such as new parts. This card is for the person who drives often and spends a lot of money on gas. Of course, if you don’t have a car, this card would be worthless, but even if you only get gas 2 or 3 times a month, it is still worth it.

For example, you might just drive several miles to work each day and more when you go shopping or out. Maybe you buy gas 2 or 3 times a month depending on the miles per gallon you get for your car. With gas prices where they are, depending on how many gallons your cars hold, it could cost $100 to $200 dollars per month. If you get 5% cash back, you would save $5 to $10 per month or $60 to $120 a year.

Many people might think that even $120 a year isn’t worth it. I say, if you don’t use the card, it’s like you’re just throwing $10 a month in the garbage. Would you do that? If someone came up to you and said, “Here’s 10 dollars. It’s for you.” Would you say, “Eh, no thanks. I’m good.”? I doubt that.

Credit cards have a risk. If you don’t pay off the balance every month, you will have to pay an interest rate from 12% as high as 30% or more. That would way outweigh the 5% cash back you get. There is a simple solution. Pay off the balance every month. You might say that’s easy to say but much harder to do. It really shouldn’t be. You have to pay your mortgage or your rent every month, so why not pay off your credit card every month?

In addition to the gas you will also get 1% cash back on everyday purchases and 5 – 20% cash back at certain stores. This means that by getting the gas card, you do not give up the perks of other rewards cards.

If you spend money on gas, the Discover Open Road Card is worth it. Don’t let gas prices gobble you up. Combat the rising prices on both gas and everyday purchases with cash back.
