Living Cheaper - Garden

In the garden using lots of mulch will save a great deal on your water bill. Mulching material can be purchased and it is up to you what you choose. Choose the easy-grow ones such as tomatoes, beans, zucchinis and cucumbers. A lemon or orange tree in the back corner means you can squeeze your own free juice for several months of the year. It can also be frozen if there is excess.

Homemade marmalade is soo cheap and tasty and quite easy to make. Those mulches that take the longest to break down will save the most money. You can also incorporate your own materials for mulch. Grass clippings can be spread on the lawn over the top of newspaper layers. Sticks from pruning will help to stop it blowing away.

Many beautiful plants are drought hardy, so need less watering. Buying native plants will usually save in the watering department, but some of these do need to be watered regularly until they are established, so be sure to read the label. Many other plants such as camellias guzzle water if its available but flower quite readily when water is restricted. They may not grow as fast, that's all.
