There is a huge market for people who want to sell used books. It’s a great way to de-clutter your home, a very “green” way to recycle unwanted books, and it puts a few bucks back in your pocket. There are many web sites that sell used books. It pays to investigate before deciding to go with a particular site. Some vendors will offer five dollars for a particular book, while another may offer fifteen. The difference may be due to the specific topic or genre’s they specialize in. Each site may have different requirements regarding the condition of acceptable books, but most specify that they are damage free, with little to no signs of wear and tear. Examples of damage include, broken bindings, ripped or missing pages, excessive highlighted text or significant notes in the margins.
When choosing a site to sell used books, find out when and how you get paid. Is the site actually buying your book from you? If so, payment should be relatively fast. The site will then post it online for re-sale. Other sites accept your books and offer it for immediate re-sale. However, payment will only be sent when the books are sold. The latter option may sell the books for a higher amount, but you may need to wait a while before it is sold. If timing is not an issue, that may be the preferred option.
Some sites can only send payment via check, but more and more vendors send funds via PayPal. If quick turnaround time is an issue and you have not already done so, take a few minutes to set up a PayPal account. It can decrease the time to receive payment by as much as five or six days. If you don’t want to sell used books online, there are other options, besides keeping them. Frequently local bookstores will purchase used textbooks.
