Some Facts About Debts And Biblical Teaching

In Mathew 18:23-34, a poor person who owes many debts is reported to the master, since he is unable to pay off bills. However, If he pleads for more time, his master cancels all his bills and sets him free. We should allow the less fortunate people make small monthly payments, however long it may take them. This will enable them go on with their life and minimize or eliminate their financial difficulties.

Jesus suffered and died on the cross for sins He never committed. He offered to die for our own sins which are the same as debts and through His death, all human race was saved and finally set free. Jesus Christ who is the Son of God is a good example that, we should also set the poor people free by canceling their bills especially if we are sure they can not afford the money.

Leviticus 25:35-38 says, we should not charge interest from people who owe us money, if we really know they are in great financial stress. Instead, we should just forgive them and let them pay their bills without making any profit from them. God saved the Israelite from captivity where they worked as slaves and took them to the land of Canaan where there was plenty of food. God did not do this to benefit Himself but rather heard their prayers and had mercy on them.

The bible does not condemn debt. Instead, a borrower is allowed to have money from the lender and return with favorable interest. It condemns lenders who take advantage and charge high interest rate. The bible says in Romans 13:8 that, we should avoid debts except the debt of mutual love.
