Bicycle Accidents Can Happen Anywhere

Do you participate in the “Ride Your Bike to Work” day every year? Maybe you ride a bicycle to and from work or for fun on a regular basis. Either way, you’ve undoubtedly seen or been involved in a bicycle accident. As a matter of fact, more than 4,000 Floridians were injured or killed in bicycle accidents in 2006, according to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle report.

It isn’t even just cars going by that you have to be wary of either. You may find yourself having to dodge obstacles left in the roadway by homeowners, property managers or owners or even business owners. If you’ve been riding a bicycle for most of your life, then you may be adept enough to avoid whatever lies in your path. If you’re a youngster, or just learning to ride, you may not yet possess enough control of your bike to carefully and safely move around the obstacle in front of you. You may suddenly find yourself in a tangle of bike tires and trash cans with scrapes and bruises all over. Maybe even a few broken teeth!

Every bicycle rider, and passenger, is always admonished to wear a helmet, much like motorcycle riders. The reason is simple. There is nothing around you for protection in the event of an accident like there is if you are riding in a passenger vehicle. Even if you are involved in a seemingly minor bicycle accident, your injuries could be severe. In general, you could sustain any of the following injuries:

· Minor scrapes and bruises

· Broken teeth or jaw

· Broken arms, hands, feet or legs

· Shoulder dislocation

· Spinal cord damage

· Brain injuries

Riding a bicycle is great fun and it is an excellent form of exercise. No matter where you ride, though, you need to be aware of the traffic around you and the obstacles in front of you. Just like every other driver on the roadway, cyclists have laws they must obey. Be responsible. Know those laws, drive defensively when you’re on the road and enjoy your ride.
