Birmingham Car Accidents: What to Expect from Your Insurance Company?

If you are in a car accident, your own car insurance company will undoubtedly be very interested in your property damage and medical condition.  Even though the accident was caused by another driver, your insurance company plays a role, potentially a large one depending on the type of accident and the type of coverage that you have.

If you have personal injury protection (PIP) included in your insurance policy, your own insurer will cover your medical expenses up to your policy limit.  When you incur medical expenses related to the car accident, your PIP will cover the expenses.  Be sure to know what the limit is, however, because your insurer will stop covering the expenses once you hit the limit.

Your PIP, which is basd upon your contractual relationship with the insurer, may require you to submit to an independent medical examination upon the request of the insurer.  Often the examination will be conducted by a doctor chosen by the insurance company.  The insurance company is contractual obligated to only pay medical expenses that are caused in the car accident.  If the insurer suspects that they are paying for more medical costs or treatment than are warranted by your injuries.

You insurance policy may also include underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage.  This type of insurance kicks in whenever the driver who hit you is uninsured or has a policy that does not cover your damages.  In those instances, your UIM policy will allow you to file a claim against your own insurer.  Your insurer then "steps into the shoes" of the person that hit you.

If you have any questions about your own insurer's obligations or your personal injuries, you should consult an Alabama personal injury lawyer.
