Receiving Work Compensation

What do you do in the event of a work related injury?  You may need to claim work compensation, but you may not know where to begin.  If you need information about responding to an industrial accident or other injury at work, the responsibilities of an employer or hiring an attorney then look no further.

When someone is injured at work, it is most important to receive the proper medical attention.  Preventing long term health problems is more important than dealing with legal issues at this point.  Receiving first aid that may prevent any future problems must be obtained. After you receive medical care, document any evidence you can.  Get the names and personal information of the witnesses or other people who were injured.  Take photographs of the injuries.  If possible, take photographs of the site of the accident.

An employer is accountable for the safety of each employee in the work place.  Accidents must be prevented by ensuring that all equipment is running properly and that equipment maintenance is done on a regular basis and as advised by the manufacturer.  All hazardous chemicals and waste need procedures for safe handling and storage.  Each employee must receive proper training for the job they perform and to be in the environment.  A work place is required to have good lighting, ventilation, and necessary heating or cooling.  Safety equipment is required for some jobs, and it must be provided by the company.  Hazardous materials must be stored safely and workers must be trained about characteristics the chemicals. Facilities that are used for rest or work must be safe and appropriate for their purpose.

Your company is also responsible to plan for emergencies and post emergency procedure.  For example, if a worker will be in the vicinity of a chemical that can damage their eyes, it is expected that an eyewash area be provided in case someone is exposed.
