Brachydanio Albolineatus, Rerio, Nigrofasciatus, etc. are not known to a lay man, these are the names of fishes in the aquarium. Here, Albolineatus is more common as Pearl Danio or Gold Danio. This species of the fish is basically found in India or Sumatra; it grows to 2 inches in size. Slim Jim is a fish that has a pressed figure, and it has a shimmering body, this makes it the look alike to ‘Mother of Pearls’. Albolineatus comes in colors like green, red, blue, yellow, etc. this fish is basically quiet and calm in nature. It can be found in communal tanks. Danio belongs to the smarter lot of fishes; it prefers living in the plant- y waters. Darker gravel is preferred for this fish over a lighter shade. The lights in the aquarium are more focused on the front part of this fish. The food habits of this fish are similar to that of the Rerio. Its water condition also needs to be the same as the Rerio breed. The slimmer ones with the colorful body are the males. Albolineatus breeds in a similar way as Rerio.
Rerio is often referred as Zebra Danio. This is often found in the Eastern parts of India. This again is a small fish. It grows as long as 1 ¾ inches. They can be found in beautiful bluish black, golden stripes and also in silver colors. Rerio belongs to the smarter clan, and they are more comfortable in a peaceful and calm atmosphere. Rerio does not have a problem with the kind of water they are put in, and they feed themselves on all kinds of food. The female gender of the Rerio clan is much thicker than its male counterpart. The Rerios are one of the best breeding kinds.
1. Breeding Rerio
To breed the Rerios, one needs to keep in mind that the depth of the water must not exceed 3 inches. It is always suggested to coat the bottom of the tank with pebbles completely. Rerios prefer tanks that are long. Rerio eats its own fry when they are born. It is also important that the water temperature does no exceed 80 Fahrenheit. There are many other methods in which the Rerios can be bred.
2. The next breed is Nigrofasciatus. It is called the spotted danio. It has its root from India and Burma. This danio grows up to 1 ½ inches. It shares it shape with Rerio. Not just the shape, but this shares its food habits with the Rerio. The only difference is that, in breeding, the spawning for this breed is much more dramatic; otherwise, it’s the same.
3. Brachydanio Aequipinnatus is a Giant Danio. This has its roots from the Malabar Coast. This fish can be seen in Sri Lanka also. Aequipinnatus grows up to 4 inches in size. It is a silver fish, and can be found in yellow and blue stripes. This fish changes its color to rosy shade when it is breeding. These are one of the hardest to net, so, it is necessary to read the instructions for handling before they are netted. This breed can actually hang around with big boys in the communal tanks
Aequipinnatus can actually survive water that is reasonably hard. This fish also adapts well in water that is alkaline. This fish can survive in larger tanks. Aequipinnatus produces eggs that are in the semi-adhesive state, which fry in 3-4 days, so the temperature is generally maintained at 80 Fahrenheit. Aequipinnatus prefers pebbles to cover up the bottom of its tank.
