Are You Yelling at Your Puppy? – Never Shout or Scream at Your Dog

If you are yelling at your puppy to get him to stop a negative behavior, stop now! He is only going to finish later when you are not looking. When you shout or scream at your pet, it does not instill positive reinforcement when trying to teach him anything. He will know you are not happy with him, but will not understand why.

Your dog thinks of you as just another dog. If you start yelling at him he will only get excited and will keep doing whatever he is doing wrong, not realizing that it is unacceptable behavior. He will begin to have a negative association between yelling and the way he feels when he is around you.

Do not confuse yelling with a disciplinary tone of voice. When communicating with your pet, he will understand more easily if you keep the pitches in your voice down to the basic three...

A calm and pleasant voice will assure your puppy that you are pleased with him and will ease any anxiety he may be feeling. Use a soothing tone of voice when you are praising him for good behavior. He wants to please you and is the most content when he knows you are pleased with him.

Use a more direct tone when you want your dogs attention. You will be communicating with more authority, as if speaking with a work associate. Speak firmly, direct and to the point and your puppy will react better to your command.

A disciplinary tone is the third and should not be confused with yelling. You need to use this tone when you are trying to get him to stop what he is doing immediately. You do not want to yell at him. That will just scare and confuse him more than he already is. There is a fine line between a disciplinary tone and shouting. Do not confuse the two. Use brief commands like "Petey Down" or "No Bark". Try not to use more than two syllable commands. Dogs are smart but you need to keep it simple. Too many words just sound like "blah, blah, blah" to your dog.

The bottom line is; do not yell at your puppy or dog. Use positive reinforcement instead, when trying to break bad habits.
