Tom is a veterinarian and pet owner. He runs the site AtHomePetEuthanasia.com and performs local at home pet euthanasia for people in New England.
The decision to euthanize a pet is one of the the hardest decisions an individual may have to make. They are , after all, not just pets but part of the family. The notion of putting an animal to sleep isn't any doubt discouraging, but usually, it is the smartest thing people can do for their incurably suffering cats and dogs.
Lots of animal lovers are invariably challenged with the decision regarding when and if to have their much loved animal companions euthanized. Yet people appear to know very little of the method and what it entails. For those unfamiliar with the term, "euthanasia" is the Greek term meaning "good death" inferring the least painful and humane method of dying and putting an end to the animal's suffering. Lots of people think that they are doing their suffering pet a favor by allowing them pass on naturally on their own. It is far more kind and more generous to help an animal who no longer has any standard of life to permit her to be euthanized - surrounded and comforted by family and, if at all possible at peace in her home environment or special spot. The prospect and advisability of euthanasia should be thought about carefully and debated with knowledgeable animal medicare professionals including your own doctor who knows your animal's history and personality.
Working in an animal clinic for several years afforded me A LOT of experience with animals - some good and some bad. Euthanasia is always the most sad and hardest endeavor for both owners and medical staff alike. But I have witnessed the degree to which medication can help treat the ailing, and to be sure, there's a limit to its capabilities. When all the options have been tried such as therapy, surgery, or medication, and there's no end in sight of the animal's suffering, then home pet euthanasia is the only way of relief one can provide for their beloved pet.
Usually, an injection of the euthanasia fluid is given in one of the veins; usually the pet doesn't even notice it. Almost immediately, the brain functions of the animal cease, as does the heart. It is exactly the same as an overdose of anesthesia, which is painless. Although each pet is different, generally the affects of the euthanasia injection set in after only a couple of seconds ; if the animal feels anything, it's sleepy. Additionally, they cannot ( in the human sense ) comprehend that they are dying. It isn't in their abilities to understand the chance of death ; they aren't subject to that kind of fear. In fact, most of the animals I ever dealt with were comparatively content ( considering the kind of agony their infirmity was subjecting them to ) until the end. In just about all hospitals, the owners are permitted to be by their pet's side as it gently passes away.
Pet Euthanasia At Home
Euthanizing a pet does not undermine the significance of its life. To the contrary, euthanasia appeases the animal's suffering and affords the protection of its dignity. When all the other treatments become ineffective, euthanasia is the only means to ending the nonessential suffering of terminally sick animals.
