If you're thinking of building a chicken house, and you would like some more information on the best way to do this - then this article was written for you. In particular we're going to answer the question "why build one?", give you advice for looking after your chickens, and show you how to build your own coop and run. By the time you have finished reading this article, you'll be raring to get building!

Let's start by looking at the main reasons why you would want to build one. For many, the reason is to take a break from our modern, hectic living style - and get "back to basics". Also, keeping your own chickens really can provide you with an astonishing amount of eggs for next to nothing. Although looking after chickens can be time consuming, you're also going to find it very rewarding!

So what's the first step to keeping chickens? It has to be having a place to keep them.

You're going to need a chicken house or coop - and there's several options of where to go from here. First, you can buy a "prebuilt" coop - which is the most expensive option. Second, you can choose to build your own. This is what most people seem to choose, and it's actually very simple to do.

So how can you build your own chicken house and run? It's simple enough to make a simple "pen" using only wooden stakes and chicken wire. But this won't be enough by itself. Because your chickens will also need shelter from the weather.

A simple "box" style house is usually fine. This can be made out of plywood in an afternoon - and you can even get more fancy with a little effort and creativity. It's a good idea to follow some plans before you start building, though. Many of the best ones are available to download online.
