Most people, me included, find a project that interests them, get an idea in their head and off they go. With a hammer in one hand and nail in the other you start building your small backyard chicken coop. Good for you. You know exactly what you're doing, right? Well, like most of us we don't like to take the time to read instructions and waste anytime planning out the design. Most of us figure we know enough to get by and certainly enough to house pet poultry. Well, you may be right, and then again you may not be. So what's the damage without proper consideration of some key factors? Here are just a few things you may run into if you don't give yourself enough time to think the project through:

  • Sick Chickens
  • Dead Chickens
  • No eggs
  • Hazardous odors
  • Hungry Chickens

I'm guessing that list doesn't sound like something you're interested in visiting and I don't blame you. That doesn't sound like a fun family project. So, know your thinking, not in my backyard, my pet poultry will be fine. There's nothing in my yard that is going to harm my chickens and there certainly are not any hazardous orders. Ok, so odds are pretty good that you have a decent head on your shoulders and know how to begin building a small backyard chicken coop with out any problems. But before you go ahead and get the hammer and nails out, make sure you consider these very important things:

  • Plan out a good location, and or a portable coop.
  • Plan out a basic design, most likely you will stray from it a little as you go on, but know where you will feed them; can they easily get to the food? Know where your nesting boxes will go, can they easily reach them?
  • Protection. Predators to chickens come in all shapes and sizes, so make sure you have protection for them inside and outside the coop.
  • Ventilate. This is where the hazardous odors come in. Without proper ventilation your coop become a danger to your pet poultry as well as yourself.
  • Insulation. What is the weather like? Will your chickens be cool in summer and warm in winter?
  • Cleaning. Plan out the best design for cleaning. This will make your life easier and your chickens much happier and healthier.
  • Lighting. Install a light in and around the coop. This helps not only you to see, but your chickens require light also. Installing a light outside the coop helps also as protection from predators.

Keeping these factors in mind when building your small backyard chicken coop will save you time and money as well as the lives of your precious pet poultry. Don't' forget, they are living little creatures to, and believe it or not, not as easy to replace as one would think. You become quite attached to your feathered friends very quickly.
