There are so many choices when you are faced with Chihuahua dog feeding! Dry food, canned food, semi moist foods, gourmet meals, treats of every sort…the list goes on to include literally thousands of brands and types of food for your best friend. But not all food is best for your dog and deciding how you're going to deal with Chihuahua dog feeding is a challenge!
Most people feed a combination of dry and canned foods. Dry food is probably healthier for your dog and more economical, but canned food is definitely tastier. Semi moist foods have a high sugar content and are not usually a good choice for dogs that are predisposed to hypoglycemia. Consider the needs of your dogs pertaining to vitamins, proteins, and minerals. Check with your vet as to the proper portion that he recommends for your dog.
A word of warning about feeding: a dog of any age can get a violently upset stomach if his food is switched from one kind to another suddenly. If you plan to change some one feed to another, always allow for a gradual change - introducing the new ration slowly over a period of time.
However challenging Chihuahua feeding seems to be, there are always those moments when you just can't help but sneak your Chi treats from the table. For most dogs, a few table scraps or treats won't hurt a bit and can sometimes be beneficial. But always be careful when feeding your little dog human foods as some of these foods are harmful or even lethal to him. Chocolate, as you may have heard, contains a substance called theobromine that dogs can't handle. In some cases, a half an ounce of chocolate could kill a 4-pound Chihuahua.
Onions, and to a lesser extent, garlic, can also be deadly to small dogs. They contain a substance that breaks down red blood cells. If your Chi were to eat a whole onion it could cause sudden anemia and even death. Some evidence has been recently procured that suggests grapes and raisins had something to do with the deaths of several dogs.
Anything that contains alcohol or caffeine is off-limits for dogs in general, but tiny dogs in particular. Bones should always be kept from dogs as they can cause many problems.
Hopefully, these few tips have helped you overcome the problems of Chihuahua dog feeding. A healthy, happy dog makes for a happy home!
