If you are planning to get a cat for a pet, then the first thing you should know is that there are certain human food items that you should not feed your feline. You should be aware about these food items because feeding your cat the wrong food can be harmful for him. Here are some of the food substances that you should never feed your pet.
Baby food
This might come as a surprise, but the food that you feed your baby can actually harm your feline. This is because most baby food items come with onion powder and this can cause anemia in your pet. If you check the labels of baby food items, you just might see onion powder in the ingredients portion. Baby food does not really contain the nutrients that your cat needs, and if you do not meet the nutritional needs of your feline, he could end up becoming malnourished.
Chocolate
You surely must have heard about chocolate being dangerous for dogs when ingested. The same actually goes for cats as well. This is because chocolate has theobromine. This chemical compound is perfectly safe for humans to consume. Cats and dogs, however, are unable to process theobromine fast enough, and because of this, small amounts of this chemical compound could remain unprocessed, and would then lead to theobromine poisoning. This can then cause diarrhea, vomiting, panting tremors, abnormal heart rate, seizures, excitability, and even death in both cats and dogs. Thus, keep those chocolate bars from your felines.
Tea and coffee
Caffeine is fatal to cats and there is no antidote for the poison that tea and coffee can bring to your feline. Much research has been poured into the toxicity of caffeine in cats, and it has been determined that only 8 teaspoons of coffee is enough to poison a cat that is just around 6.5 lbs. Thus, if you are fond of these beverages, better keep these from your cat as well. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning include diarrhea, hyperactivity, muscle tremors, increased body temperature, vomiting, seizures, and death.
Garlic and onion
Garlic and onion should never be fed to your cat because these can damage their red blood cells. When this happens, your cat would inevitably suffer from anemia, making your pet lethargic and very pale. If not given immediate medical attention, this can be a potentially fatal illness altogether.
These are just some of the food substances that you should keep out of your cat's dish bowl. For more food items to watch out for, do not hesitate to consult your veterinarian.
