Why do dogs chew? Some chew for pleasure, others when bored, and partly, dog preference. But no one wants their dog to chew on their own things.
Dogs chew because:
1) For most dogs, it's natural, fun, passes time, is self-rewarding, and self-reinforcing (especially if the chew tastes good).
2) Chewing is an emotional outlet for a nervous, anxious, bored, or lonely dog.
3) Chewing burns up nervous energy for the under exercised dog.
To prevent destructive chewing, you can:
1. Dog proof your home, all dogs explore the world with their mouths, so make your personal things unreachable. Especially books, clothing, shoes, garbage, and small appliances like cameras, cell phones, and remote controls. Keep food in containers and no snacks on low tables. Also ask yourself: Can she jump, climb, and leap? How tall is she when standing on her hind legs?
2. Prevention is cure. Confine her in a dog-proofed area until you are confident she understands house rules.
3. Do not set up your dog, cast-off clothes, shoes, or towels you give her are no different from your current things.
4. Give her tasty alternatives, an adolescent (under three years) or a puppy (under one year) has greater need to chew. Give her lots of chew toys and rotate them to keep things interesting for her.
5. Supervise, let her explore and learn the boundaries of her home.
6. When she chews the wrong thing, make a loud noise, a hand clap or say "NO!" Then, immediately hand her a dog chew and praise her when she bites it. She will equate chewing "her" toys to your praise.
