Dogs are easily the most popular pets, universally considered man’s best friend and a well loved family pet in millions of households across the world.
Due to large market for dogs, dog breeders around the globe are successfully making a lot of money and you could join them too! But a word of warning, dog breeding is a challenging undertaking and you must be certain to gather all the information you can before determining if dog breeding is right for you.
So what do you need to know?
Well firstly, and most importantly, you should be aware that there are strict regulations in place with regards to the breeding of dogs and you must be aware of these in order to stay on the right side of the law. By learning them and adhering to them, you will not only start off your business in the best possible way, but you will also be well on the way to breeding fit and healthy animals.
Dogs are fantastic pets there is no doubt about that. But breeding them is another matter entirely and you must be careful to care for your animals properly. Ensure they have a kennel or somewhere to shelter and rest. Ensure each individual dog has enough space and enough food. Do not chain your dogs or cage them for hours on end. Allow them to move around naturally and freely and the dogs will be much happier and will have a more amiable temperament, which is one of the most desirable traits we want to maintain when breeding. Ensure the dogs are groomed regularly and have access to vets when and if necessary.
This is legally and also morally the right way to go, inevitably there will be unscrupulous dog breeders out there, but be aware that engaging in such activities can see you banned from breeding or even keeping animals in may countries. Being a patient and caring breeder is much more rewarding and you can make a lot of money breeding dogs, as long you know exactly what to do.
Remember, as long as you know the laws that govern your particular country, and you follow them carefully, you can’t go wrong! If you are unaware of these laws, please research them prior to attempting breeding.
So we’ve covered the laws, what next?
Well, you should consider that successful dog breeding can take a while to get right. But by putting in the initial work, you can have many pups for years and years to come.
You should consider where you will get the first set of dogs that you wish to use for breeding. You may have a dog at home that you would like to use or you may need to purchase a male and female for breeding purposes. If you do decide to buy a dog, always use a reputable dealer and try to have the dog checked over by a vet to ensure he/she is healthy and well cared for.
Have you thought about which breed of dog you would like? Choosing the perfect breed to suit your needs can be a little daunting at first, but don’t worry, there is a lot of information available to help you make a wise and informed decision.
Breeding dogs is a matter of timing. There are various cycles that govern breeding and being aware of these is essential to have success. The female will show willingness to mate when she is ready, but this can take some time. When she is ready it is important that the pair of breeding dogs are kept together in a safe placed and then nature will take it course. One of your most important duties as a breeder will be spotting when the female is ready and this can be achieved fairly easily by studying the behaviour of your animals.
Good luck and remember whether you wish to breed dogs as a business or as a hobby. Please be a caring and responsible owner.
