Actions speak louder than words, which is why humans can tell what others are feeling by looking at other people’s gestures. This can be the same with dogs. Dog owners sometimes struggle with the fact that their dog is a part of their family, but at the same time isn’t human. By recognising certain gestures you will be closer to knowing how your dog is feeling, and be more aware of how your dog is likely to react. You can tell if your dog is relaxed, anxious, or is about to become aggressive by looking at what they do with their bodies. This can be extremely useful, especially when your dog is confronted with other dogs, or even new people you introduce into your home.
The first step to realising what is going through your dog’s head is looking at its posture. This is fairly obvious, as a dog’s gestures can be similar to what a human may do when showing different emotions. When a dog is confident with its surroundings, it is likely to stand tall, yet relaxed. When a dog becomes anxious, much like a human, it will cower into a lower position, showing that it is being submissive and not looking for any conflict. A dog may also curve its body to the direction that it is facing; another way a dog can suggest that he is being submissive. You can tell when a dog is likely to become aggressive as it will probably look tenser rather than relaxed.
You can also tell what a dog may be feeling by looking at how he uses his tail. This may be more difficult with some breeds of dog when they have, perhaps a curled, or very short tail. Generally, when a dog’s tail is straight and upright, it is a content and confident dog. Much like his stance, the tail will show that he feels comfortable in his environment. Most people are aware that when a dog wags his tail from side to side vigorously, it means that the dog is excited and aroused by something. This will be evident perhaps when you return home after a period of absence, or when you are reaching for one of his favourite toys. Excitement will be the major thing that you will associate with your dog’s wagging tail, but this can also denote aggression. You will be able to tell by looking at the rest of your dog’s body language to distinguish between happiness and aggression. When a dog is anxious about something, the dog’s tail will be lowered towards his hind legs, and will maybe be placed in between them.
Another way you can tell what your dog may be thinking is by looking at what he does with his ears. Normally, when your dog is in a relaxed state, his ears will follow suit. Obviously it will be harder to tell with some breeds of dog, especially those with smaller or larger ears. If your dog raises his ears, this means that he is concentrating. You will see him do this when you are about to give him food or throw him a toy. When his ears are pointing backwards, this may mean that something is making him angry, and is usually a sign that he may become aggressive. This may happen when the dog is confronted by another dog, or believes someone to be invading his personal space. This can also be a form of submission, but again you will be able to tell the difference by looking at what the rest of his body is doing.
The gestures listed above are very general, and will not answer all of your questions about dog behaviour. Do some research into the area to really make the most of your understanding of your dog’s mentality, or seek advice from a professional. Read books about dog behaviour to get a better idea about why dogs act the way they do. This may help a great deal to establish a good bond with your dog.

Dog owners can forget that their pet is an animal, and have that animal instinct imbedded in their DNA. Dogs can be natural hunters, yet also very sociable animals. This combination can confuse their owners as to why dogs do different things and why they react in certain ways. Being able to recognise features of their body language may help to strengthen your re
