I always knew there were foods that dogs should not eat. But a recent story I watched on the TV news got me thinking even more about what makes up the list of dangerous foods for dogs.
The report was about a black Lab that got into his master's purse and ate some TicTacs™. Of particular concern was a certain ingredient that is found in TicTacs™, Tums™, and other sugar free candies.
To be honest, I'm not sure if my big French Sheep Dog would eat breathmints if I put them in her food dish (and believe me, there are times I thought about it!) I kind of think she would turn her nose up at them – but, then, some dogs have a sweet tooth.
I'm now glad I never offered them to her.
It all seems kind of funny, a dog sneaking a breathmint. Kind of like a kid smoking behind the barn and trying to cover his breath. The difference is, this dog nearly died.
The substance xylitol, which is considered natural and an acceptable sugar substitute for humans, affects a dog's liver, as well as its insulin levels.
If you ever become tempted to hide your dog's breath with a breathmint, keep this in mind. Add them to the list of foods dogs should not eat.
The National Animal Poison Control Center can be reached at 1-888-4435. Call them if you think your dog has eaten anything that includes xylitol.

Alcoholic Beverages
Avocado
Coffee/chocolate
Macadamia nuts
Raisins and Grapes
Garlic & Onions
Salt
Yeast dough
Moldy and spoiled food (again -- goes without saying)
Raw salmon
