Was developed in Mediterranean area.
Made its appearance in Canary Islands under Francis I, patron of Renaissance, but greatest success was in Court of Henry III.
Became favorite of Italian nobility in 14th Century.
Descended from Barbet or Water-Spaniel.
Was used as barter item by sailors.
