Although the United States is home to millions of pets, the number of pet owners with pet insurance is dismally low compared to the figures of several European countries. The percentage of pet owners in the United States who have pet insurance is up from a paltry 1% (circa 2000) to a current high of just over 5% which is still shockingly dismal compared to countries such as England (20%) and Sweden (49%)! These figures may in part explain why more than 7 million pets are euthanized in the United States every year.

What Is Pet Insurance

So just what is pet insurance and why should you as a pet owner bother getting it? Pet insurance is the animal equivalent of health insurance for people and is designed to protect your pet against any illness or injury that may befall it in the future. Veterinary medicine advances are on par with those of human medicine which means that vets are now able to diagnose and treat conditions that in the past would have meant your pet had no other option than to be put down (euthanized).

Financial Cost Of Having No Pet Insurance

Those advances in veterinary medicine mean that vet clinics are now equipped with high-tech, sophisticated equipment which by necessity also means that the cost of running such a clinic has gone up. And guess what? Your vet has to offset those costs somehow and one doesn't have to be a genius to figure out how that's done...ultimately passed on to you, the pet owner and end-consumer! Such escalating veterinary medicine fees obviously make getting pet insurance very good sense; the vet fees for treating an uninsured animal could easily run into thousands of dollars these days!

Emotional Cost Of Not Having Pet insurance

One of the things you must seriously consider as a pet owner is exactly what your pet means to you. If you treat and consider your pet as a valued family member then pet insurance should be high on your list of priorities if you don't already have it. Just imagine having to deal with the guilt of having the beloved family pet euthanized all because you never bothered to get coverage that would have cost a measly $10-$30 per month. And don't even think about how your kids would take it...just pray they never find out that their lovable bundle of fur would still be alive today if he'd only been covered by insurance!

If on the other hand you pretty much don't care for your pet then not only is pet insurance not for you, you should seriously reconsider whether you should have a pet at all. Far too many people treat their pets as disposable amusement objects; once they get tired of them they get rid of them, a fact that goes a long way to explain the burgeoning number of animals in shelters and the millions of pets euthanized each year! In the long run pet insurance could one day be the difference between life and death for your pet!

New advances in veterinary medical care now mean that many pet medical emergencies and conditions that used to be untreatable no longer need be so! Dog Breeds: Hybrid Dogs, Mutts and Purebred Dogs
By: Kayye Nynne | 30/10/2007 | Pets
What's in a breed? That's the controversial question that has plagued the dog world ever since dog breed development! The issue at hand is really a matter of maintaining breed purity and keeping those dastardly mutts at bay! But what if I was to tell you that the lowly mutt can hold its own and more against the refined so-called purebred dogs or that purebred dogs are really nothing more than strain-refined mutts!

The Greyhound Dog's Tale of Tragedy
By: Kayye Nynne | 30/10/2007 | Pets
Each year more than 100,000 Greyhound dogs are killed! Why? The reason is simple...a cruel sport called dog racing! It truly is hard to imagine how so exalted a dog breed could end up where it is today—slaughtered in the thousands each year. This is all the more shocking when one considers that at some point in Greyhound dog history it was a crime punishable by death to kill one (during the reign of King Canute).

Caucasian Mountain Dog: Dog With the Uncanny Resemblance to the Bear
By: Kayye Nynne | 17/10/2007 | Pets
In 2004, a very irresponsible documentary by none other than a well-established and esteemed company such as National Geographic on the subject of so-called designer dogs went on air. That particular episode which was grossly and factually incorrect depicted the Caucasian Mountain Dog as a lethal weapon and a menace to society! The fallout was the killing-deaths of several of these wonderful dogs, many pets being thrown out of their homes overnight and mass hysteria by an ill-informed public!

Dog Smarts: the Tricky Issue of Defining Dog Intelligence
By: Kayye Nynne | 17/10/2007 | Pets
Less than 500 years ago, much in part to the renowned French philosopher Rene Descartes, animals were considered incapable of intelligent thought, expression of emotion or for that matter the ability to feel pain; the result was widespread and wanton cruelty to animals! Luckily over time this fallacy was corrected and today it is the rare individual who still believes that animals don't think or are incapable of expressing emotions.

Dogs: Did the Wolf Tame Itself to Evolve Into the Domestic Dog!
By: Kayye Nynne | 17/09/2007 | Pets
It has widely been assumed that humans tamed the wolf and bred it for selective traits to become the dog. The flaw in this theory is that it assumes that humans from 15,000 years ago had both the smarts, the time and enough tame wolves from which to conduct their selective breeding program. A more reasonable theory is that the wolf initiated the taming process and self evolved into the domestic dog!

Dog Evolution: How the Dog Evolved so Rapidly Into a New Species
By: Kayye Nynne | 17/09/2007 | Pets
Evolutionary change is by nature slow paced and usually it takes many thousands of years before one species evolves into another; but in the case of the transformation of the wolf into the dog comparatively speaking, on an evolutionary scale it happened overnight! Why and how did that happen?
