Hints on Chicken Coop Nesting Boxes - Good Planning for your Chicken Nesting Box

There are many chicken nesting boxes available commercially in the market and it also comes in various forms and sizes. However, if you want to save money or be costs efficient, you can build a nesting box with just a fraction of the cost instead of buying a pre-built one. Most pre-built nesting boxes you buy need to be assembled in one way or another. In fact, you're just paying an "over the top" sum for the material when these can also be easily obtained to a much lower price or to no costs at all.

A nesting box should not only be kept as a safe and comfortable place where the hen lays her eggs but also be kept as clean as possible. Chicken nesting boxes, generally by design, is to prevent the hens to be able to perch above the box. The reason is that if a chicken can perch above the box, then "technically" it will end up contaminating the whole set of eggs and the nesting box itself with its droppings.

There are some things you need to remember in building these chicken nesting boxes. One is the roosting perches you need to provide for the chickens. These perches should be 18 to 24 inches above the ground. Some people use more than one perch, which looks like a ladder or a stair that is leaning to the side of the chicken house. This allows the chickens to have some space to move around. Basically it is about 8 or 10 inches of perching area for each chicken. Although the sizes also varies, a rather common and effective nesting box size is 12 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 12 inches tall, in which it can accommodate up to three or five hens.

Most people use dry wood shavings, shredded paper, or straw for nesting to keep the eggs clean and to prevent it from being cracked. You must also not forget to keep the nesting box in a comfortable and safe area where the hen feels safe enough to relax in some shade and away from the light.

Having a good nesting plan before you start in this business is important. It is one way to increase the productivity and efficiency of the business. Nesting boxes are not only an advantage to the chickens, but also to the people who are into this business. It is important to keep your chicken house organized where the eggs are produced in one area were it can be kept clean and safe.
