How Can I Keep My Cat Off the Kitchen Counter?

Firstly, cats like heights, and chances are your cat likes the tables in your home too. The kitchen however probably smells better than other places in the house and no doubt your cat has been rewarded for his or her forays by finding various tasty tidbits on the counter. My cats are very good at finding empty tuna cans unsurprisingly! These cans look empty to me, but the cats always find a few morsels to enjoy, or just the flavored oil. When we put these straight in the recycling, the cats spend much less time on the counter.

If you have a trash bag or container on the kitchen counter, this will likely be a target for your cat as well. Try keeping it under the kitchen sink, or you can try lining the lid of your trash can with double sided sticky tape. Cats don't like getting sticky paws. You will have to replace this regularly however, as it loses its stickiness. A closed container may work too, if you remember to keep the lid on tightly.

If you aren't fussy about your counter surface, you can try lining the edge of your counter with double-sided sticky tape too, or covering your counter in cling-wrap, as cats don't like the feeling of this under their paws.

Many cat owners use a spray bottle to deter their darlings from the kitchen. In my experience, cats are wise enough to connect you with the squirt bottle and so may stop venturing onto the kitchen counter when you are around, but if there are still great attractions up there, they may well visit when they know you can't see them. You can also try turning the faucet on them when they are in the sink.

If your cat is attracted to toys on the counter such as sponges or paper towel rolls, you can try putting these in a closed container or out of sight.
