How To Have Fantastic Fun With Your Dog

Games

Games are one of the most important ways we have of communicating with our dogs. Dogs learn through games and so although they enjoy them, games are not ‘just for fun’. You have control over what games your dog plays and it is up to you whether your dog learns the right or wrong things. Remember, games are also a great way for a dog to find out who is controlling whom, so ensure that you are the one in control. There are many different varieties of games that dogs and their owners can play. Here are some types of games that you can play with your dog.

Dog chasing a toy

This game has been played by dogs and their owners for as long as dogs have been pets. The owner throws the toy, the dog runs after the toy. The dog may pick up the toy, bring it back to the owner and give it to him. A simple game of fetch is great, it provides good exercise and many dogs love it. You can teach him to bring the toy to you, to put it in your hand and so on. However, the dog may begin to play a game of possession. Be careful, some dogs can begin to learn the wrong things. If this game is played too much without control, a dog can learn to run after anything that moves, including other dogs, children, joggers and bikes or cars. Therefore it is a good idea to play the game, but to teach control, so that you can call your dog back when you choose. Herding dogs, such as Border Collies and sheepdogs. usually excel at this type of game.

Possession

Dogs develop two versions of this game.

Game One

involves the owner holding the toy. This then becomes a ‘tug-of with dog and owner tugging furiously. Quite often one or both will begin to growl. This type of game is highly motivating for the dog. But, take great care. If your dog is controlling these games, he could be learning to growl at you and to pit his strength against yours. Ensure that you can stop the game and take the toy away from him at any time. If you cannot do this, it is best to avoid playing this game until you have developed greater control.

Game Two

involves the dog holding the toy and preventing the owner from getting it. The dog usually teases’ the owner into playing and the owner accommodates by then chasing the dog. Again. if this game is not under your control, your dog will be learning the wrong thing. Ensure that you can get him to come to you when you ask. Play in an enclosed space, maybe even with a lead or long line on your dog. When he comes to you, reward him for coming first, before trying to take the toy. Teach him to give up the toy for a reward. Again, if there are difficulties or if your dog won’t give up objects, avoid this game until you have more control. Many people think that exercising two dogs together will be half the work for the owner. This is seldom the case, as games between dogs can get out of hand. Play with both dogs separately rather than simply letting them play together all the time.
