How to Keep Your Home Clean and Free of Pet Fur

Are you noticing a lot of dog or cat hair building up on your sofa and carpet? Rest assured, you aren't alone. While most shedding occurs at the end of the winter season, shedding can also be a year-long issue.

Establishing good grooming practices with your pets will keep your home clean year-round as well as make your dog and cat feel and look better.

Follow these simple steps to rid your home of pet fur:

1.  Brush your pet with a brush designed for your pet's coat. Your local pet store will be able to assist you in picking the correct comb or brush. This special comb or brush will increase the amount of dead and undercoat fur collected before it reaches your carpet or furniture.

2.  Shampoo your pet after brushing to remove mats and tangles that can get worse after bathing and drying. And a really efficient cleaning tip is to bathe your cat or dog before scrubbing your bathtub. Since bathing your pet will produce lots of wet, smelly fur in your bathtub and/or shower, "kill two birds with one stone" by combing pet and bathroom cleaning.

The goal in cleaning your pet's fur is to get their hair "squeaky clean". To obtain this, purchase a shampoo specially designed for dogs or cats. Be sure to rinse and repeat the shampooing if your pet is especially dirty. This will prevent dry skin and other irritations that can cause them to scratch to the point of breaking open their skin, causing bleeding. This is a definite mess you don't want on your furniture or carpets.

Another way to keep your home fur-free is to use professional grooming services to bath and groom your cat or dog. While you can certainly do this yourself, a groomer can use their professional equipment, products and trained skills to clean your pet's ears, trim their nails (a real challenge with most cats!) and cutting the fur around your pet's feet. This last service will tremendously cut down on the amount of dirt tracked into your house. Using a professional groomer will also mean the grooming mess will be at THEIR place of business and NOT your house. Sometimes it's worth paying for services that you could easily do. Let them deal with the cleanup!

One last tip for keeping your home clean and fur-free is to keep a towel by the backdoor to wipe your pet's wet or muddy paws. Just stop your pet at the door and wipe their paws before letting them continue into the house. I have personally used this for our dog since the day we got her and, boy, what a difference it makes.
