How To Start A Dog Breeding Business

Are you considering becoming a dog breeder, but you’re just not sure how to go about getting your business started?  There are a number of different steps that you need to take in order to start your own dog breeding business and it’s important that you take all the necessary precautions and go through the necessary processes and procedures of starting a legitimate business.  This article will briefly describe some of the different steps in starting your own dog breeding business.

First, in order to form any kind of small business regardless of what the business is, you need to file the necessary paperwork to create your business organization.  Depending on your business structure, you may have to file articles of organization with the state in which you live.  This would be done if you were creating an LLC.  If you’re simply going to operate under your own name as yourself, you’re probably ok with simply claiming your income on your individual tax return.  These are just simple guidelines.  For exact procedures and process for your unique situation, you’ll want to consult with your local accountant or tax specialist.

Next, you’ll want to acquire the proper licenses and registrations for operating your own breeding business.  These will be needed in order to legally operate as a breeding business.

If you haven’t made the decision already, which you probably should have, you’ll need to decide which breed you are going to focus on.  You’ll generally want to focus on one breed as having many breeds can get complicated.  Be sure to get in contact with a good veterinarian as you will often have to make visits during the pregnancy periods of your dogs.  Have a good working relationship with a veterinarian will help make the process go much more smoothly.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you’ll want to stock up on the proper equipment including medicines or shots, crates, beds, bowls for feed and water, leashes, and any other items necessary for caring for your dogs as well as the puppies that come with each litter.  Since you will be selling the puppies, you’ll want to be able to provide them with the best care possible and when they leave your care they should be in excellent health.

Following these few simple steps will help you get well on your way to becoming a successful dog breeder.
