How to Stop a Dog From Digging – Part 2: Basics to Stopping the Holes

In part one; we discussed the reasons why dogs dig, boredom, anxiety, rebellion, loneliness, pent up energy, or possibly just the need to escape and run free. Here in part 2 of how to stop a dog from digging we will cover the various methods you can use to cease the destructive behaviour.

The reasons for the digging quite often lead to the answers. If your pooch is digging out of boredom, give them something to do, provided toys and chews to keep them busy in your absence. If they are not getting enough exercise, walk them, run them, play fetch, provide at least 45 minutes of vigorous exercise and they won’t have the energy to do the digging. If you pup is bound and determined to escape the yard in your absence than you may just have to crate the dog or at least keep them indoors when you are not able to supervise.

Remember, the reality is that you will more than likely not be able to 100 percent eradicate the digging, this wouldn’t be fair to your animal if this is part of their nature, what you can do is manage it and direct it.

There are many more ways that are far more labour intensive for how to stop a dog from digging, what I have written about here are just the basics. I would only suggest the other methods if the above solutions don’t work or are not feasible. These alternate methods will be covered in another article detailing the more drastic measures.
