How To Teach Your Dog How To Stand Nicely

Being able to control your dog to stand will have numerous benefits. Also it’s valuable for your dog to learn how to roll over too. Follow this great advice to teach your dog some great tricks.

Teaching your dog to stand

This is something that you may or may not want. The difficulty is that dogs are more likely to move from standing than they are from sitting or lying down, so it is of less practical use.

It would be taught in exactly the same way. Lure your dog into a standing position using the treat. Keep the treat still or the dog will move to follow it. Reward before your dog moves at all. Gradually increase the time he has to stand.

Teaching your dog to stand still when being handled

This is extremely useful and something that all dogs should be taught. However, it is separate from the exercise just described. A dog should be happy to accept being handled, but without a word being used. The dog can move slightly but should stay still enough to enable you or the veterinary surgeon to handle, brush, dry or examine him with relative ease and without the dog becoming anxious.

Teaching your dog to roll over

When the dog is happy to lie down on command, get him to lie down on a reasonably comfortable floor. A dog will be more willing to lie down on warm carpet, than on cold concrete. Reward him for this. Show him the treat and move it in such a way that the dog rolls onto his side. Reward him for doing this.

Using the shaping technique, gradually teach him to roll further and further to get the treat until he is happy and able to roll right over onto his other side. Shaping means that instead of waiting for the end result before rewarding, you reward any steps towards the desired result.

Slender dogs with thin coats, such as greyhound types, will find this uncomfortable unless you provide a soft floor. Do not reward your dog with a treat when he is lying on his back, as there is a danger of him choking. Use another reward or signal, such as the clicker or verbal praise, and give him the treat when he is the right way up again.

There will be times when your dog needs to be rolled over to allow for examination of his stomach, or perhaps for grooming. It is easier to teach your dog to let himself be rolled over by you when he is calm. Practise in different situations. This way, when you do need to do it for real, such as if your dog has had an accident or is with the vet, he will be less anxious about it.
