Sporting dogs that are alert, active and intelligent have historically been used by hunters to locate, flush or retrieve game from land or water.
Generally, sturdier, active dogs love kids, but unless your dog is well-trained, he may pose a risk to your children.

Many sporting dogs are still used as hunting companions today, although their gentle natures and high level of trainability have also earned them the reputation of being among the best family dogs.
The Akita (Japan), the Komondor (Hungary), the Portuguese water dog, the Newfoundland, the Saint Bernard (Switzerland), the Alaskan Malamute, the Bernese Mountain dog (Switzerland) and many more make this group a veritable United Nations of dogs.
Very bright and rather determined breeds such as Rottweilers, Dobermans and Akitas have become extremely popular, even trendy.
This is the list of dog Herding Breeds according to The American Kennel Club: Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Beauceron, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Border Collie, Bouvier des Flandres Briard, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Old, English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Puli, Shetland Sheepdog, Swedish Vallhund.
But despite what those who breed and sell crossbreeds might try to tell you, these are not, nor will they likely ever be, recognized as purebred dogs.
A diverse group skilled in a number of disciplines, most working breeds are robust, intelligent and headstrong, often unsuitable for apprentice owners.
The sporting group comprises some of the most popular breeds, including pointers, setters, retrievers and spaniels.
The Anatomy of a Canine
Wolves have remarkably thick, two-layered coats to protect them from extreme weather.
Most dogs are able to detect scents and tastes that are beyond human perception, but some breeds have especially acute sensory skills.
How about their hearing? It is, of course, essential, especially when you're giving your commands.
Typically, they sport solid grey, brown or black coats, composed of light to dark colour-banded hairs, called agouti, like grey wolves.
