However, Basset Hounds have special needs when it comes to their exercise, including the age of the dog, because puppies have different needs than adult dogs do. Basset Hounds as Puppies:
Since puppies are not as developed as full-grown dogs, they have different needs. Puppies, just like children, need extra rest during their formative years. Basset Hound puppies need rest after exercise up until the age of about six months. Since their muscles and bones are still developing, this rest period is essential. Skipping it during this stage can cause problems later down the line. Both children and adults need to understand this concept of down time between exercise periods, so that your puppy can grow to maturity as a healthy dog. Running with a Basset Hound can be very hard on the dog, and most likely will not be much fun for you. Walking on a daily basis, however, is perfect, although frequent rest stops may be necessary due to his short legs. Even this moderate exercise, along with a healthy diet, will keep your Basset Hound from becoming obese, one of the common problems associated with this breed. Obesity can result in arthritis, back trouble, or even hear problems, so weight management is crucial for your Basset Hound's health.
In order to be healthy, your dog needs to be at an appropriate weight for his age. Throughout your dog's life, you will need to maintain an exercise regimen in order to keep obesity at bay. By following through on this simple rule, you can guarantee a relationship that will last you and your Basset Hound for years. Regular walks in the park or around several city blocks will help your Hound's heart as well as burn fat calories keeping your little pup healthy and happy.
