Owner's Guide to Betta Fin Rot
Betta fin rot is a relatively common condition. It is caused by a bacterial infection that causes fin tissue to rot away. You may be wondering what could cause your fish to develop this disease.
Causes
Most bettas suffer from this because the water quality is poor. This isn't the only reason these fish develop this condition though. Injury and an unhealthy diet are also precipitating factors. Other causes of stress can also lead to fin rot.
Some fish just have bad luck and will easily develop it. If you have one of these fish, you will have to try to prevent this by changing the water on a daily basis. However, changing the water so much will stress your fish out even more which may increase his risk of developing the condition.
Symptoms
The most noticeable symptom of betta fin rot is loss of fin tissue. In some cases, the fins may break off in large pieces. Other fish just have frayed fins around the edges. The edges can be bloody or blackened.
Treatment
If you catch it in an early stage, you should be able to treat it relatively easy. The condition is brought on by gram-negative rod bacteria. Therefore, you should treat it using antibiotics made specifically to fight this type of bacteria.
You can also use broad spectrum antibiotics to treat betta fin rot. The most common antibiotic used to treat it is Tetracycline. Kanamycin and Maracin 2 can also be used. Maracin 1, an antifungal medication, can also be combined with Maracin 2 if you think your fish has a fungal infection too.
It's important that you continue treatment until all bacteria are killed off. If you stop treating your fish too early, the bacteria will stick around and cause symptoms to come back. Once the fins start to grow back, it's safe to stop giving him medication.
