So, you want to build a portable chicken coop and raise a few chickens, but you do not want to spend a lot on building plans and materials? Been searching everywhere for free portable chicken coop plans but don’t have the luck? A regular person will spend over $500 on a chicken coop. In fact, if you buy one pre-assembled coop, it could cost you over $1000. Why spend out that kind of cash when you could easily build your own coop for a lot less? Here are some tips to help you build your very own portable chicken coop and some benefits you can have if you build one.
Portable chicken coop can offer you a lot of benefits. By making the coop and its attached run portable, you can basically use them to keep your whole garden trimmed. Another benefit of using portable coops is that it can help you keep your expenses on feeding the chickens lower. Since greens are a natural part of your chickens’ diet, you don’t need to buy anymore as much foods for them. Instead, you can supplement a grain diet with the grasses in your backyard that a movable chicken run will allow your chickens to eat.
In building your chicken coop, you should follow the same steps as with a regular size coop to ensure that your chickens stay healthy and happy, and produce a good amount of eggs. Give your chickens enough space. Each bird should have at least 4 square feet of room within the coop itself and at least 10 square feet of room outside in an enclosed chicken run. Chickens need to have about 3 horizontal feet on a roost for them to have adequate room for sleeping. Make sure that there is enough air circulation inside the coop to keep your chickens comfortable. Ensure that your chickens feel safe in their coop. Build the walls out of solid wood material and make it predator-proof. Wires are suitable for the fencing that can stop animals from getting into the chicken run but it is not a good material for the wall of the coop itself. Possibly, the easiest way to make a portable chicken coop is to add wheels to one end and a long handle to the other. This will allow you to move the coop around easily, and at the same time you don’t need to worry about it moving by itself when you want it to stay stationary.
One common problem with portable coops is that they can be harder to make predator-proof. This is true for the chicken run part of the coop, because unlike with stationary coops you cannot make the bottom of it “predator-proof” using ceramic tile. That is hard to implement and would defeat the purpose of having the coop be portable in the first place. To solve this, you can add wire mesh underneath the run. This will stop predators from getting in, but your chickens can still be able to eat the grass through the mesh.
