When it comes to training a dog, there are two ways of ensuing that a mistake is never repeated. One is by coercion and punishment while the other is by instilling a sense of right and wrong. Positive dog training works on the second philosophy, by generating good vibes between the dog and the owner and by using the reward - award mechanism. Here's a closer look at how this method works.
It works towards altering the behavior of the dog. It focuses not just on the learning of a command, but on associating behavior with a command. So in a nut shell when a particular command is specified, the dog replicates the behavior, as if it is a stimulus. Positive dog training can be used to allay the aggressive nature of your dog and help him in realizing his full potential.
The owner first needs to identify the nature of his pet and what kind of rewards does he prefer. They may vary from food, praise, and positive communication to a pat on the back, or midnight strolls. These would act as motivating elements for the dog.
Now comes the part which requires loads of patience. You need to determine certain words; commonly refer to as keywords and make your dog understand the actions to be performed vis-à-vis each key word.
Certain key words commonly used are:
1. Sit
2. Stand
3. Fetch
4. Run
5. Stay
Immediately reward the dog when he performs the desired action. This action provokes a reaction in the mind of the dog that this is the correct thing, and he uses it as a reference for future. While training, it is vital to remain consistent with the key words as well as with rewards as to reinforce the feeling of 'correctness'. However, after a dog has been completely trained the rewards can be substituted for a simple nod signifying 'yes' in response to a cue which merits a response.
Positive dog training works as an adhesive to strengthen the bond between the owner and his dog. It brings forth a feeling of togetherness, mutual respect and the dog looks upon his mentor for showing him the right path.
