Secrets to Breeding Healthy Discus Fish

Whenever you think of breeding discus fish, the first thought that comes to mind is to make sure that the fish are healthy and disease free. In order to do that you need to purchase them from an authorized fish dealer, ensuring they are checked properly.

Discus only get disease when we mistreat them, it being the main problem for them to fall sick, as they get sick because of the stress. While breeding discus fish, care has to be taken that their immune system does not decrease because of the stress, as it could make them fall sick.

The first thing you need to while breeding discus is purchase a large bare bottom tank, around 25-27 gallon would be ideal as fish need plenty of space to breed. Avoid the stress in discus by placing the aquarium away from doors, as the movement around doors causes them to stress and thus fall sick.

While cleaning the aquarium ensure the pH balance of at least 6.5 and the temperature of the water remain at 86 degree F and are not changed much. The aquarium water should be clean, soft and should contain no metals or chlorine.

You could use a water purifier, good quality tap water or RO unit for this. As discus fish are shoaling fish, keeping them together in pairs of four to six keeps them happy and healthy. Feed the fish any fish food like the brine shrimps, granulated food, fish flakes, blood worms or the live ones, making sure to clean up part of the tank water and removing the food debris left over after they have finished their food.

This is of utmost important as left over food can make the water dirty quickly and hold bacteria which will make the discus sick and affect their breeding process. It is good to plan out a feeding schedule for them as it helps them follow a routine and they're trained for their food time.

Once you have done all the above things you will realize that breeding discus fish is an enjoyable and reward giving hobby.
